Abstract

Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) have emerged as pivotal players in advancing financial inclusion, particularly for low-income and underserved communities in India. Over the past decades, the sector has witnessed significant evolution—from informal credit networks to structured institutions delivering diverse financial products. This study examines the historical trajectory, current dynamics, and emerging role of MFIs within the Indian microfinance sector. It highlights how regulatory reforms, digital innovations, and clientcentric approaches have reshaped the operational models of MFIs, enhancing their outreach and sustainability. The analysis also explores the challenges of over-indebtedness, governance, and balancing social objectives with financial viability. Findings indicate that MFIs are transitioning beyond traditional micro-lending, increasingly contributing to women empowerment, livelihood development, and rural economic growth. The study underscores the need for adaptive strategies, technological integration, and policy support to redefine the role of MFIs as catalysts of inclusive and sustainable development in India’s financial ecosystem.
